Packers look to conquer the Vikings in their home opener
The Green Bay Packers are 1-0 and play the 1-0 Minnesota Vikings in a Noon Central Time start in their first game at Lambeau Field in 2019.
The Packers, of course, defeated the Chicago Bears 10-3 in the opening game of the NFL season while the Vikings hosted the Atlanta Falcons and came away with a 28-12 victory after leading 28-0 in the third quarter.
The Vikings have Kirk Cousins at quarterback and their usual offensive weapons in Dalvin Cook, Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen, and Kyle Rudolph. Cousins can pick a team apart when given time. The Packers will need to have another strong game on defense. It all starts upfront and getting pressure on the quarterback.
Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the GB offense didn’t have a great game in Week 1. They didn’t play together at all in the preseason and they were also going against one of the top defenses in all of football. It doesn’t get easier facing the Vikings. I think the Packers will need to put up more than 10 points in order to win on Sunday. The offensive line needs to keep the pass rushers away from Rodgers and they will need to run the ball effectively in order to open up the passing game.
Field position will be huge once again and JK Scott showed that he is one of the top punters in the league. If you can’t move the ball on offense, it is comforting to know that you have the ability to pin the other team back and make them go the length of the field.
The Vikings scored 28 points against the Falcons but the drives all got started after miscues by Atlanta. In fact, their first two touchdown drives started in Atlanta territory and a blocked punt, a fumble, and two interceptions contributed to the Vikings’ four touchdowns.
A lot of us Packer fans enjoy poking fun at the Vikings at their fans for their lack of championships and Super Bowl Trophies, but the Vikings have been a major pain to us lately. It’s time to start beating this team once again. The Packers need to show that they plan on ruling the North once again and a win over Minnesota would go a long way in doing just that.
It’s hard to put much stock in Week 1 wins, but the Packers showed that they are capable of playing defense and they will probably need a big game from their D while their offense figures things out. Neither team turned the ball over in their first game and turnovers will be huge in a game like this one.
This is the home opener for the Packers and they will be paying tribute to Bart Starr. How appropriate it is that this game is on the 15th. Lambeau Field will also be introducing new features in order to improve the fan experience and the home-field advantage. Be sure to avoid doing the wave when the Packers are on offense and to cheer loud and hard when the defense is out there in order to disrupt the Vikings’ offense and to possibly lower beer prices.
In all seriousness though, despite the fact that this is only the second game of the season, it is a huge opportunity for the Packers as a win would give them the early division lead and also show that the win on Thursday night was no fluke. I think that this will be another tight game, but I also think that the Packers will make enough plays on both offense and defense and start the season 2-0 with 2 huge wins within the division. Let’s get behind our team and cheer the Packers to victory on Sunday!
