Packers Look to Get the Wheels Turning on Offense at Ford Field
The Green Bay Packers make their annual trip to Motown on Sunday as they face the Detroit Lions at Ford Field at Noon Central Time.
The Packers are 2-1-1 after their 22-0 win over the Buffalo Bills last Sunday. The Lions are 1-3 after they lost on the road to the Dallas Cowboys on a field goal on the final play of the game, a 26-24 defeat.
Aaron Rodgers had his worst statistical game of the season last Sunday vs Buffalo. Randall Cobb was out with a hamstring injury, and there is a high possibility that he will be out this Sunday as well. Both Davante Adams and Jimmy Graham are battling their own injury problems, and Geronimo Allison is in the concussion protocol. It is likely that Rodgers will have to rely on one or more of the rookie receivers to make plays on Sunday. Aaron Jones has given the team a boost in the running game since he returned in Week 3, and the team might need a strong performance on the ground from Jones and the other runners in order for their offense to stay on the field and produce touchdowns.
For Detroit, Matthew Stafford is having a solid year so far. He has a solid group of receivers with Golden Tate leading the way. At running back, Kerryon Johnson in Week 3 became the Lions’ first 100-yard rusher since November 2013. This offense is capable of putting a lot of points on the board. It will be up to the Packers’ defense to keep the score down. Stafford is still prone to throwing interceptions. Keep the pressure on him and perhaps he will throw a few of them on Sunday.
The last time the Packers were in Detroit, they were winding down their miserable season last year on New Year’s Eve. It was the last game as a Packer for many players and coaches. Aaron Rodgers didn’t play in either of the two games vs Detroit last year.
Detroit is 1-3, but that one win was a 26-10 home win vs the New England Patriots on a Sunday night, the same day that the Buffalo Bills won their road game at Minnesota. It just goes to show that there is a lot of parity in the NFL these days. Given the Packers’ injury woes, especially at receiver, it is not a stretch to say that Detroit has a good chance of winning this game. The latest odds showed the Packers favored in this game by a single point.
The Packers need to win as many games as they possibly can, especially within the division. The Bears are 3-1 and looking like a scary team right now. Perhaps they will eventually come down to earth, but you can’t argue with their record, no matter who they beat. The Vikings are heading in the opposite direction right now with their 1-2-1 record and a trip to Philadelphia to play the Eagles, the team that embarrassed them in the NFC Championship Game last January. With all of that going on in our division alone, now is not the time for them to suffer a setback.
The Packers need to be ready for anything and everything on Sunday. They need to be prepared and ready to play for a full 60 minutes. If they do that, I believe they will win. Let’s get it done on Sunday so we can enjoy another win during the week.
