Packers run (and pass) all over Cards to improve to 4-2
The Packers improved to 4-2 with their 34-13 home victory over the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.
After an exchange of punts, the Packers drove down the field for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. They would score 2 more touchdowns sandwiched around a field goal for a 24-0 lead before Arizona scored 10 points for a 24-10 GB lead at halftime. After holding the Cardinals to a field goal, the Packers added 10 more points for the final margin of victory.
Thoughts about this win:
Jordan Love threw 4 more TD passes and made some plays running the ball too. That interception was unfortunate as the receiver slipped on the wet turf. Before Love, the last Packer QB to have consecutive home games with 4+ TD passes was Brett Favre in 1995 vs the Vikings and Bears.
The defense did its part by taking the ball away 3 times with fumble recoveries. They held Arizona to only field goals, 1 at the end of the 1st half and the other to start the 2nd half, and prevented them from getting closer to tying the game or taking the lead. Xavier McKinney had his interception streak end, but that was an amazing run by him. Maybe he can start a new streak next week. Neither team had a sack in this game.
Romeo Doubs responded with 2 TD receptions in his first game since the suspension. Hopefully that distraction is in the rearview mirror and everyone involved can focus on football. Christian Watson made 2 big receptions, 1 to move the chains on 4th down, and the other reception was on a deep pass close to the goal line for a TD. Jayden Reed had the other TD reception.
The Packers caught a break in the 1st half. Jayden Reed ended up fumbling the ball away on a punt return, but offsetting penalties made Arizona punt the ball again. Keisean Nixon fielded the ball this time, and he returned it 39 yards. It only took a single play for Love to find Watson down the field for a TD and a 24-0 lead.
The Packers got their running game going once again, especially in the 2nd half while trying to preserve the lead and run down the clock. They finished with 179 rushing yards, losing a few at the end due to kneeldowns, but I’ll take that.
Despite being in the same conference, the Packers and Cardinals don’t seem to meet very often. It was 2018 when the Cardinals last visited Lambeau Field, and in that game, a bad Arizona team came in and won vs a Green Bay team that was not much better. A few hours after that loss, Mike McCarthy was fired. Speaking of McCarthy, the Cowboys got destroyed by the Lions at home 47-9. The NFC North has all 4 teams with at least 2 games over .500, the only division in the NFL with that stat.
Overall, it was a very nice win. Hopefully they established some good habits and keep that offense going and the defense can keep forcing those turnovers. The Packers remain at home next week as they host the Houston Texans in their “Winter Warning” game. They will be wearing white, including their helmets. It will be a sight to see. In the meantime, enjoy this win and have a great week Packer fans!
