Packers find winning formula in win vs Rams
The Packers are finally back in the win column after their 20-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
Both teams traded punts on their respective first possessions of the game. On the Rams’ second possession, Jonathan Owens sacked Brett Rypien and forced a fumble, which was recovered by De’Vondre Campbell. The Packers turned it into a touchdown as Aaron Jones ran it in from 3 yards out. The Rams kicked a field goal on their final possession before halftime and the Packers missed theirs, keeping the score at 7-3 going into the half. The Packers got a little bit of offense going in the second half, as they often do. They turned an interception into a field goal and added a 20-yard touchdown from Jordan Love to Luke Musgrave for a 20-3 lead, which would end up as the final score.
Thoughts about this win:
It’s a relief to finally stop the losing and get a win for a change. They are still 3-5, but maybe some of the talk about job security for the players and coaches can simmer down, if only for a week or so.
They did a lot of good things, but there were still too many penalties and turnovers, and some very sloppy ones at that. Jon Runyan was called for lining up offsides twice, and they happened on two different possessions. Both penalties negated a 4th-down conversion and the Packers had to punt. Before the half, Jayden Reed was penalized for a false start and Anders Carlson missed a 48-yard FG attempt 3 plays later to end the half.
The Packers turned the ball over twice to start the second half. They wasted a great kickoff return by Keisean Nixon when on the first play from scrimmage, Dontayvion Wicks fumbled it away to the Rams. Aaron Jones had a nice run on their next possession, but he fumbled it away too. Thankfully the defense was up to the task and the Rams missed a 49-yard FG attempt after the second fumble.
Jordan Love and Christian Watson connected for a 37-yard deep pass on the clinching touchdown drive. Those plays were rare this season, but it was a joy to see. Hopefully Watson is alright. He limped off the field.
Overall, it was a nice win and they did some good things in this game. It was against the Rams though, and they didn’t even have Matthew Stafford in the game. Whatever the situation, it is never a bad thing to develop good habits. They will have to bring those good habits into the game next week, when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road. For now, let’s just enjoy this win. Have a great week Packer fans!
