Packers bucked by Broncos in another close loss for Green Bay
The Packers fell to 2-4 after a frustrating 19-17 road loss to the Denver Broncos.
Denver converted on 3 field goals to lead 9-0 at the half. The Packers got on the board with a field goal in the second half to trail 9-3. After a Denver touchdown, the Packers came to life, scoring 2 touchdowns to take a 17-16 lead. The Broncos drove down for a long field goal, but the Packers had a final opportunity to go ahead with either a field goal or a touchdown. They got neither as Jordan Love’s deep pass was intercepted and Denver was able to run out the clock.
Some thoughts after this tough loss:
That hot start by Love in their first two games of the season seems to be ancient history now. He wasn’t able to connect with anything down the field, and the pass that got intercepted was a bad decision.
None of the units (offense, defense, special teams) played very well in this game. The defense just couldn’t get off the field. They did a decent job holding Denver to field goals, but when your offense is doing next to nothing, that isn’t good enough.
This is shaping up to be a rough season for the Packers unless they can find a way to turn this thing around right away. Denver has a horrible defense, but the Packers couldn’t find any consistency on offense.
Where do the Packers go from here? Their offense played poorly against two bad teams in the Raiders and Broncos. Their defense allows too many first downs and there seems to be no cohesion on that side of the field. We saw a linebacker covering Davante Adams on a key drive in Las Vegas. Against Denver, there were too many receivers who were wide open.
Joe Barry is likely on his way out of Green Bay after this season. I wouldn’t say that Matt LaFleur is on the hot seat yet, but he looks lost and badly outcoached out there. Jordan Love is still going through his first year as a starter. It’s not time to blow the whole thing up, but we need to see a better performance than what we’ve witnessed these last three games.
For the Packers, 3 out of their next 4 games are at home, including next Sunday vs the Minnesota Vikings. We’ll see if they can find some answers and have enough to get a win, but they need to play a lot better than how they played at Denver. At least the Vikings are playing on Monday night and have a short week ahead of them. Only time will tell. Take care Packer fans!
