The Packers are off their bye and a mile high as they take on Denver
The Packers are off their bye and get ready to face the Denver Broncos (who have also had a lengthy time off) on the road in the late afternoon on Sunday.
The Packers are 2-3, their last game, a 17-13 road loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football. The Broncos are 1-5 after their 19-8 road loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night, their 16th straight loss to KC.
The Packers are familiar with Russell Wilson, but it will be their first time facing him wearing a uniform other than that of the Seattle Seahawks. Their offense is nothing special, although they do have guys that are capable of making big plays whenever they touch the football like Jerry Jeudy, who has been rumored in trade talks with the Packers. Marvin Mims Jr. hasn’t caught too many passes, but he averages 24.6 yards per reception. The Packers haven’t impressed much these last two games on defense. They need to make a statement in the thin air of Denver. Get after the quarterback and create turnovers.
Jordan Love hasn’t played very well these last two games. Perhaps getting Aaron Jones back and getting their running game going will help him out in a big way. The football can travel very far in Denver. This is a good place to revive their struggling offense.
Special teams can definitely play a huge part in any game, especially in Denver. If they need a long field goal at the end of either half, this is definitely the venue to try it.
The Packers and Broncos have not played each other very often, but there have been some memorable games, including one in January of 1998, and I won’t get into any further details about that one. Reggie White took over a game late in 1993 vs John Elway and the Broncos. The Packers crushed Denver in a 1996 game that many thought was a Super Bowl preview, but Denver got knocked out before the Packers could play them again. In 2007, Brett Favre hit Greg Jennings for the winning touchdown in overtime to win at Denver on a Monday night, the only time the Packers have beaten the Broncos on the road. It is time for another road win.
Denver is not a good team. Their lone win of the season came on the road against the Bears, where they overcame a 21-point deficit to win at Soldier Field. The Packers are coming off their bye week, but Denver had some extra time off as well, having played on Thursday night that same calendar week. If you ask me, I think Denver has the edge as far as time off as they might be fresher and less rusty than the Packers.
The Packers are off their bye and mini-bye before that. They now have a more conventional routine they can follow these next five weeks as they are all Sunday games, the last four being noon (Central Time) starts. Games are not won on paper though, and there can be some crazy things that can happen in Denver. I think the Packers will come out with a purpose and maybe not play a great game, but I think they will be good enough to hold off Denver.
Welcome back fellow Packer fans! Let’s get behind our team and cheer them to victory this Sunday!
Go Pack Go!
