Packers look to take the roar out of the Lions this Thursday night
Lambeau Field is the site of this Thursday night’s game as the Packers prepare to host the Detroit Lions.
The Packers are 2-1 after their thrilling 18-17 home win over the Saints. The Lions are also 2-1 after they defeated the Falcons 20-6 at home.
The Lions were supposed to be rebuilding when they traded away Matthew Stafford, but Jared Goff has turned into a serviceable starter for the team. Amon-Ra St. Brown is their star receiver, but the Packers can’t rest on TE Sam LaPorta, who has 18 receptions already. Goff has cut down on his turnovers, but if the Packers can get consistent pressure on him, they have a great chance of getting takeaways. The defense played a nice second half in their comeback win over the Saints. Let’s carry it over into this game.
Jordan Love might have two of his offensive players in this game, Aaron Jones and Christian Watson. If that happens, it will be a huge boost to this offense. Detroit’s defense played well in their two victories this season, not so much in their loss to the Seahawks. If the Packers can put together an effective running game and give Love time to throw the ball, they can be successful.
Dan Campbell is in his third season as the Lions’ head coach. He knew he had to to change the culture of losing, and he is starting to get results. He also knew they needed to start beating the Packers on a consistent basis if they are going to achieve their goals too. They have won their last 3 games vs Green Bay.
It is only Week 4 but there is a feeling that one of these two teams will win the division. With the Bears being a mess and the Vikings losing those close games they won last year, and rumors are circulating about them trading away Kirk Cousins, this has become a 2-team race in the division.
We remember how last season ended. The Packers made a late push for the playoffs, but when all they needed was a victory at home over the Lions, they got outplayed and outcoached and saw their season come to an end. It also resulted in significant changes to their roster, most notably the transition to Jordan Love at QB.
This will be the first of two meetings between the teams, and both will be Thursday games. They meet in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day. This is an opportunity to prove to the Lions and the rest of the NFL that the Packers are a much different team than they were last year. They can also send a message to the Lions that we’re here too and we plan to be a huge roadblock between them and the top of the division.
After a huge Sunday of preparation for their home opener, the home debut of Jordan Love, and their thrilling comeback win, the players had a short week to prepare for another home game, this time against what looks to be their toughest competition within the division. I am not a fan of Thursday night games and anything can happen, but if the Packers can get a win and not suffer any significant injuries, they will be in decent shape and will have some extra time off between now and their next game. Let’s get it done Green Bay!
