Clutch play gives Pack huge road win vs the 49ers
What a thrilling win! Mason Crosby made a 51-yard field goal as time expired to give the Packers a 30-28 road victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.
The Packers jumped out ahead 17-0 before the 49ers scored a touchdown right before halftime to make it 17-7. They scored to start the second half to make it 17-14. The Packers answered with a touchdown, but they still couldn’t put the game away. The 49ers eventually took the lead 28-27 with 37 seconds remaining in the game. Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams connected for two huge completions, setting up Mason Crosby’s game winner.
Thoughts about this victory:
Even when the Packers were up 17-0, I felt they would still need to make plays late in the game in order to secure this win. Things seemed to be going nicely up 17-0, but SF broke off a long kickoff return, putting them in great position to score before halftime.
I didn’t think the 49ers deserved that touchdown before halftime. Jimmy Garoppolo was pressured and got rid of the ball. I thought it was grounding and I wasn’t the only one. That should have been a penalty, a runoff of the clock, and no points scored before halftime. Instead, they scored and seized the momentum, which they carried into the third quarter.
Another garbage non-call came in the fourth quarter. Davante Adams was hit by Jimmie Ward in what I thought was a penalty as he led with his helmet. It’s possible he might get fined for it later in the week, but that was a huge moment in the game with the Packers only up 27-24 and over seven minutes remaining. It’s amazing that Adams was able to come back after sitting out a play.
The Packers got some nice turnovers. Jaire Alexander made a great play for an interception and in the fourth quarter, Garoppolo fumbled the ball away to the Packers. It’s too bad they could only get 3 points total from those two takeaways.
This is yet another game that shows how fortunate we are to have both Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams. They connected twice for a total of 42 yards on the game-winning drive. Rodgers had to spike the ball twice because they had no timeouts left. We are also fortunate to have Mason Crosby. On a day where long field goals were the talk around the NFL, Crosby showed he still has plenty of kicks left in him.
Like I said, I knew this game wasn’t going to be easy. The 49ers are a good team and this was a nice measuring stick. They aren’t the Lions, although Detroit almost defeated Baltimore before a clutch 4th-and-19 conversion and an NFL-record 66-yard field goal by Justin Tucker to win it for the Ravens.
This is quite a turnaround from those two games in Santa Clara during the 2019-20 season. In both games, the Packers didn’t look like they belonged on the same field as the 49ers. They definitely did in this game. There is plenty of more football left to be played, but it would not surprise me one bit if these two teams meet in January.
The Packers have another tough challenge ahead of them next Sunday as the Pittsburgh Steelers visit Lambeau Field. The Steelers are 1-2 with both losses coming at home. This is a team looking to turn things around, and a win in Green Bay would be a huge boost for them. They need a great week of practice and to be prepared for another battle next Sunday.
For now, let’s enjoy this win. It was a sweet victory, especially with what they had to overcome in this game alone. Have a great week Packer fans!
