Packers look to turn the page as they host the Detroit Lions
The Packers play their home opener on Monday Night Football as they host the Detroit Lions under the lights at Lambeau Field.
Both teams are 0-1 to start the season. We all know what happened to the Packers, and the Lions trailed 38-10 at home to the 49ers before going on a 23-3 run to close it to 41-33. They actually had the ball in 49er territory before turning it over on downs to end any further threat of a comeback.
For the Lions, Matthew Stafford is gone to the Los Angeles Rams and they got Jared Goff in return as part of the deal. Former Packer Jamaal Williams is in the backfield for Detroit. They don’t have many big names but that hasn’t stopped them before vs Green Bay. The Packers need a major turnaround on defense and it starts up front. Get pressure on Goff. Get some turnovers, but most importantly, get off the field and give the offense a chance to move the ball on their side.
The Packers need to get their offense going, if nothing else, to give their defense a break. Aaron Rodgers had an awful game vs the Saints. It starts with him but the others need to produce as well. The running game needs to get going and the receivers need to get separation, neither of which happened much at all in Week 1.
Head Coach Matt LaFleur still has not lost consecutive regular-season games. He admitted he did a terrible job of getting the players ready for the Saints. He needs to bounce back as well. On the other side, Detroit coach Dan Campbell is a fiery guy. He even gave a bizarre speech, talking about biting kneecaps among other things. He knows that Green Bay is an obstacle to where they want to be and beating them would make a huge statement and fire up the whole organization as well as the fanbase.
Did the Lions downgrade at QB when they traded Stafford for Goff? Maybe they did, but they received some high draft picks in the deal. It’s obvious they are rebuilding, even though teams never want to admit that. Goff is no slouch though. He played in a Super Bowl and faced the Packers in the playoffs last January with the Rams. If you don’t get pressure on him, he can pick you apart. Do not underestimate this guy, especially with how the Packers played on defense last Sunday.
The game against the Saints was a disaster, but hopefully we can move forward. Every other team in the division lost as well so we all have the same record in the NFC North. This game on Monday night is a chance to get a head start in the division for the Packers. I know we only completed one week and Cinderella teams emerge every year, but I think I can safely say that this Lions’ team is probably not very good. If I am wrong, I will definitely admit it.
The Packers have over 100 wins vs the Lions, the first team to achieve triple digits vs one opponent. Last season, they won their 100th game vs the Chicago Bears. They are the only team to defeat an opponent at least 100 times.
As Davante Adams said, let’s just flush this last game and start over. We will play the last game in Week 2, so do whatever you want on Sunday. Watch football, spend time with your family, or get those tasks around the house taken care of, but Monday night is our night. I’m not one to tell anyone else what to do, but I say we put this loss behind us and move forward to this next game.
For many of you, this will be your first chance to see the Packers in person in two seasons. Whether you are at the game, at the bar, or at home with friends or even by yourself, get loud, get crazy, and get ready to support our team. I believe we will win this and take an early lead in our division. Let’s get loud Lambeau and everywhere else. We got this!
