No Miracle in Motown as Packers fall to Lions on the final play
The Packers played a competitive game, but they fell to the Detroit Lions 34-31 on a field goal on the final play of the game to drop Green Bay to 9-4 on the season.
The Packers didn’t have a very good first half as they trailed 17-7 at halftime. In the second half, they rallied and took the lead 2 separate times. After Detroit went ahead, the Packers kicked a tying field goal. However, they were unable to stop Detroit as they ran down the clock and kicked the winning field goal on the final play.
Thoughts about this game:
The Packers didn’t start out the game very well on offense as their first 3 drives ended in 2 punts and a fumble by Christian Watson. They were much better the rest of the way as they only punted once the rest of the way and the possession to end the first half ended in a kneeldown.
The defense wasn’t all that great as they gave up almost 400 yards of offense. They had their moments as they intercepted Jared Goff and stopped Detroit on 4th down deep in the Lions’ own territory, leading to a touchdown for the Packers. When the game was on the line, they couldn’t get that key stop. It was especially frustrating as they had Detroit in a 1st and 20 and they allowed them to get a first down and run down the clock.
It’s frustrating to lose like that after battling so hard, especially against a divisional opponent. Detroit showed why they have the record that they do. They have been in some tight games, and they have been finding ways to win them.
This one hurts but it’s not the end of anything. The Packers have no reason to think they can’t beat Detroit. There is a good chance these teams could be meeting once again before the season comes to a close. If they do, maybe it will go Green Bay’s way. They did a lot to hang with them. They just need to be the ones making the big plays at the end.
Next up for the Packers is a trip to Seattle to play the Seahawks on Sunday night December 15th. Until then, they have a “mini-bye” to rest some injuries and work on some of their weaknesses. Have a great weekend and a great week after that Packer fans!
