Huge night in Green Bay as the Packers host the Chiefs
The Packers will look to build on their 2-game winning streak as they host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
The Packers are 5-6 after winning 29-22 at Detroit on Thanksgiving. The Chiefs are 8-3 after their 31-17 road win vs the Las Vegas Raiders.
Patrick Mahomes has done a lot of impressive things since becoming a full-time starter in the NFL, but the offense this year has been very inconsistent. Travis Kelce has been the one reliable target. Most of the receivers are far from household names, except for Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who Packer fans are very familiar with. He has tremendous speed, but drops are a problem for him, especially in a game vs the Eagles a few weeks ago where he dropped a potential game-winning pass. Still, as long as the team has Mahomes, they can be a huge threat. Let’s keep this offense out of sync and continue to get turnovers.
Jordan Love is coming off two solid performances. He will need to be good once again if they are to get past KC. A.J. Dillon had some nice runs at Detroit and will need to be effective so the receivers don’t get all of the attention. KC might have their best defensive team since Mahomes became the starter. The Packers have done well these last few games with ball security. If they play turnover-free football on Sunday, they give themselves a much better chance of winning.
Jordan Love’s first career start (and his only start until this year) came at Kansas City. The Packers lost 13-7, but Love was 19 of 34 for 190 yards and a touchdown while Mahomes was 20 of 37 for 166 yards and a touchdown. The huge difference is that Love had a critical interception in the game. I am positive that Love remembers this game and he will come into this matchup ready to go out there and make plays to help his team win.
Lambeau Field is a draw in itself and fans will come out to the games regardless of the opponent, but the fact that the Chiefs are coming in and Taylor Swift will be at the game provides a huge extra flavor to the whole atmosphere. Simone Biles is expected to be there too to support his husband, Jonathan Owens, who returned a fumble for a touchdown in the Thanksgiving Day game at Detroit.
If there was ever a time to be loud, and there always is at a sporting event, this is it. I have heard and seen stories of fans chastising others for getting up and cheering during the game. Rather than complain to the ushers, get up and cheer with them. You are at a sporting event, not at a country club or a library. Get up and make noise. There is a reason why I choose #GetLoudLambeau as my hashtag during home games. We want to reestablish Lambeau Field as an intimidating place to play.
The Packers and Chiefs have played in some very memorable games over the years, especially the first Super Bowl on January 15, 1967. Both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers had their struggles vs KC, but they both got huge wins against them too. There is no reason why Jordan Love can’t do the same, and he can start with a victory this Sunday night.
As far as the whole atmosphere is concerned, and I am talking about tailgating, the energy inside the stadium, fan support, KC is one of the few places that is even close to what Green Bay has to offer. Perhaps Buffalo is in the conversation. Seattle has a loud stadium, but the pregame festivities are nowhere near what the top teams like GB, KC and Buffalo showcase whenever they are the home team.
This is a very winnable game for the Packers. If they can go into Detroit on Thanksgiving Day and win, they can certainly win this game. Just come out on fire, don’t be intimidated and stick to your game plan. If you are making the trip, have fun at the game and cheer early and often for our Packers. Wherever you are, let’s get behind our team as we cheer them on to a huge victory this Sunday night!
