Packers at Lions on Thanksgiving Day, not much more needs to be said
The Packers travel to Detroit for a Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Lions at 11:30 am Central Time.
Both teams had thrilling victories late in the game this past Sunday. The Packers are 4-6 after defeating the Chargers 23-20, while the Lions are 8-2 after their 31-26 victory over the Bears, a victory in which they overcame a 12-point deficit late in the 4th quarter.
Jared Goff is having a very decent year, although the game against the Bears was not all that great. With weapons like RB David Montgomery and Amon-Ra St. Brown surrounding him, they are capable of scoring a lot of points. The Lions gave the ball away 4 times vs the Bears, 3 interceptions and 1 fumble on a kickoff return. I’d like for the Packers to do that and see if they can hold on and win. Either way, they need to rush the passer and get off the field on defense. Give the ball back to their offense with decent field position.
Jordan Love had a great passing day vs the Chargers, but in their first meeting with the Lions, it didn’t go too well. A.J. Dillon will need to be the feature back and Christian Watson may or may not play. The receivers need to build on their performance vs the Chargers. The offense might have to be even better than they were on Sunday if they are to win this game vs Detroit.
Despite both teams winning on Sunday, they had special teams errors. Anders Carlson missed a long field goal and an extra point. Detroit fumbled away a kickoff return. Special teams can go a long way in deciding who wins and loses. Hopefully Detroit didn’t fix their problem on special teams.
In an unusual scheduling twist, both the Packers and Lions play each other on a Thursday both times this year. The Packers already played their home game and fell to the Lions earlier this year. We’ll see if they can return the favor.
The Bears got the turnovers they needed from the Lions. They just couldn’t make enough plays to win it. For example, they missed on a long throw on 3rd down late in the game that could have sealed the victory. Instead, they had to punt the ball away, and Detroit capitalized on the opportunity and scored the winning touchdown. If the Lions turn the ball over that way vs most other NFL teams, they lose the game. Maybe the Packers won’t force 4 turnovers, but they can get Goff and the Lions very uncomfortable out there.
I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving! Hopefully the Packers found a winning formula and they bring that to Detroit and come away with a huge victory!
