Packers defeat Bears and surpass them in most victories in NFL History
The Packers improved to 5-8 after their 28-19 road win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears scored a field goal and then a touchdown to take a 10-0 lead. The Packers responded with a field goal, but the Bears got another touchdown for a 16-3 lead after they missed the extra point. The Packers scored on a 4th down before halftime on a touchdown pass to Christian Watson to pull within 16-10. The Bears added a field goal, but the Packers scored a touchdown early in the 4th quarter and got a field goal to go ahead 20-19. After an interception, Christian Watson took a reverse handoff and took it in for a 28-19 lead after they succeeded on a 2-point conversion. Justin Fields threw another interception and the Packers ran out the clock, sweeping the season series for the 4th year in a row.
Thoughts about this win:
The Bears and their fans were waiting for an opportunity to finally beat the Packers after a long time, and they were in control early with the run and some key passes. It looked like Justin Fields would run wild like he has the last several games he played as they took a 10-0 lead. They eventually would increase it to a 16-3 lead, and with the Packers struggling on offense much of the season, chances of a comeback didn’t look good.
They made a gamble late in the first half. Facing a 4th down, Aaron Rodgers bought some time and found Christian Watson in the endzone for a score and cut the deficit to 16-10. Watson has been a touchdown machine these last 4 games. It wouldn’t be the last time he crossed the goal line in this game.
The Packers were porous on defense in the first half, but they allowed only a field goal in the second half. They still gave up some yards, but they were better, especially on the ground. Justin Fields didn’t have those long runs in the second half.
The Packers got into a rhythm in the second half. They ran the ball effectively and Rodgers made some timely throws. Mason Crosby kicked a field goal with under 5 minutes remaining to give the Packers their first lead of the game. Jaire Alexander had a rough game up until that point, but he came up with an interception when he jumped the route of his former teammate, Equanimeous St. Brown.
After that interception, Watson took a reverse and ran it down the left sideline for a clinching touchdown. Up 7 points, they made a bold decision and went for the 2-point conversion. Marcedes Lewis snuck in there and caught the pass, putting them up by 2 scores. Fields threw another interception to end any threat of a comeback, to Keisean Nixon near the goal line.
The Packers now have the most wins in NFL history at 787 wins. They have the most NFL Championships at 13, and they also have a 10-game advantage in the series between the two teams. Things have really changed these last 3 decades. The Packers still own the Bears.
The Packers have only won 5 games so far, but these games have been some gratifying ones. They swept the Bears, they beat the Cowboys, they beat Tom Brady and the Bucs, and they got past Bill Belichick and the Patriots. Whether or not they make the playoffs, at least they will have some nice victories to remember from this season.
The Packers now have a week off. When they return from their week off, they will get ready to host the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football. Enjoy the bye week Packer fans! We’ve earned a week off after a win over our bitter rivals.
