Packers face their former coach as the Cowboys come into Lambeau.
The Packers play host to the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday in a late-afternoon matchup.
The Packers are 3-6 after their 15-9 loss at Detroit last Sunday. The Cowboys are 6-2 and coming off a bye week. Their last game was a 49-29 home win over the Bears.
Dak Prescott missed some time this season, and he is putting up decent but not great stats on paper, but the time is winning. It is unclear whether Ezekiel Elliott will play, and he is not even their leading rusher. That would be Tony Pollard. CeeDee Lamb is always capable of having a huge game. It’s important for the Packers to get off the field on defense. They cannot allow the Cowboys to have long drives, especially when those drives end in touchdowns.
Aaron Rodgers is coming off one of the worst performances of his career. It doesn’t help that he has to turn things around vs one of the top defenses in the league. Their running game needs to get going early and often. They need to take advantage of every scoring opportunity they can get. If they turn the ball over like they did at Detroit, they might not be in this game late in the 4th quarter.
Mike McCarthy finally makes his return to Lambeau Field. He is downplaying it. Rodgers is saying how much mutual respect there is between the two. Make no mistake though. McCarthy really wants to win this game, and he is favored to do so because of the solid team around him and the Packers’ struggles.
McCarthy’s return reminds me of the first time Mike Holmgren returned to Green Bay. It was in 1999 with Seattle and the Seahawks won 27-7 on Monday Night Football. It was a miserable performance for both Brett Favre and Green Bay, but they would be alright in the long term. They would later go on to win two playoff games vs Holmgren and the Seahawks.
The Packers are down right now and aren’t even favored to win this game, nor do they deserve to be. A loss to the Cowboys and their former coach would be a bitter pill to swallow. Maybe the lack of expectations can be beneficial to the Packers. They did some positive things at Buffalo despite being heavy underdogs. Could they possibly find some kind of winning formula and put it together just enough to pull it out on Sunday? Strange things have happened before.
This is likely a lost year for Green Bay. They have almost no chance of winning the division and very little chance of even making the playoffs. They have very little chemistry and no identity whatsoever right now, especially on offense. The situation is a mess right now, and they aren’t getting out of it until they get some continuity and play as a team.
Before the season started, this game was highly anticipated and looked to be a huge part of the season for both teams. Right now, only one team has a legitimate shot to do anything in late January and beyond. They are still the Cowboys and have a reputation of falling short and disappointing. We’ll see if the Packers can find some kind of spark and deliver a winning performance. Wherever you are, let’s cheer the team to victory this weekend!
