Packers end October with a whimper after their 4th straight loss
The Packers fell to 3-5 after their 27-17 loss at Buffalo on Sunday night.
The Bills jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led 24-7 at halftime, but the Packers were able to cut it to 27-17. However, too many missed opportunities in the game sent the Packers to another loss, their 4th in a row, the first time that’s happened to Green Bay since 2016.
Thoughts about this game:
Josh Allen was too much for the Packers in the first half. Stefon Diggs continued to be a thorn in the side of GB.
The defense took some hits in this game. De’Vondre Campbell left the game with a knee injury. Before that, Quay Walker got ejected after shoving someone on the sidelines. Adding to the injury woes, Christian Watson left the game with a concussion.
Speaking of Walker, this cannot happen for GB. Jaire Alexander has been running his mouth during the game too. I am not a fan of it to begin with, but when you are 3-4 and lost 3 in a row entering this game, you shouldn’t be talking trash.
There are some positives in this game. They ran the ball well, which I knew teams could do against Buffalo. The Bills were ranked #1 vs the run, but I think a lot of it had to do with teams abandoning the run to play catch up or trying to keep pace with Buffalo’s high-powered offense.
The Packers also led the game in time of possession, gained more yards, got more first downs, and won the turnover margin. Granted, a lot of those stats came later in the game when the Packers were way behind, but you need to find a silver lining when you can. They also were 6 of 12 on 3rd down after failing to convert last week at Washington. Samori Toure also scored his first career touchdown in the game.
The Packers also outscored Buffalo 10-7 in the second half. This reverses the trend of disastrous second halves for GB. They didn’t win the game, but they might have provided a blueprint for other teams to beat Buffalo, especially teams in the AFC who will likely be seeing them in the playoffs.
The game might have been even more interesting late had Robert Tonyan not been called for offensive pass interference, wiping away a touchdown and forcing them to settle for a field goal instead. I’m biased but it looked like the referees should have kept the flags in their pockets, especially since the defender was grabbing him too.
Despite it all, the Packers lost again. There are no moral victories. This might be a pivotal week for GM Brian Gutekunst. We’ll see if he works out a trade for a receiver or two. If he fails to get anything done, the calls will likely grow for him to be replaced.
Overall, it has not been a good month of October for the Pack. They survived 27-24 in overtime vs New England but dropped 4 straight, starting with their terrible second half in London. They look to stop the bleeding next Sunday as they head to the Motor City for a Noon (Central Time) game vs the Detroit Lions. We’ll have to wait an extra hour for the game as well because Daylight Saving Time ends next weekend. Take care Packer fans!
