Packers bombed by Jets at home
What was that? The Packers looked awful, especially in the second half as they lost 27-10 at home to the New York Jets.
The two teams played to a 3-3 tie, but then the second half happened. The Jets scored 2 touchdowns, the second off a blocked punt. The Packers got a touchdown, but their defense couldn’t get off the field, giving up 10 points and any chance of a comeback.
Thoughts about this travesty of a game:
Both defenses got a lot of credit after the first half, but I think it was a combination of good defense and sloppy offense. Unfortunately, the Packers continued their sloppy offensive play in the second half.
The special teams picked a terrible time for their worst performance of the season. They did block a punt but gave up a blocked field goal and a blocked punt, the latter of which was returned for a touchdown.
Once again, the defense was unable to get a takeaway. Like the Giants did last week, the Jets did a much better job than the Packers of making adjustments in the second half.
What is the Packers’ identity right now? I know they want to rely a lot more on the running game than in previous seasons. If they can’t run the ball, they are in big trouble.
Zach Wilson wasn’t spectacular, but he didn’t need to be. When you have a defense that is opportunistic and a running game that gives you 179 yards, you don’t need to be excellent. You just have to not screw things up. He only threw for 110 yards and a net of 99 yards with the yardage lost to sacks.
Robert Saleh has got this team playing in his second year as the Jets’ head coach. We’ve seen this formula before when he was the defensive coordinator for the 49ers. Jimmy Garoppolo, like Zach Wilson, didn’t have to do much. I knew this wasn’t going to be an easy game for the Packers. Matt LaFleur needs to pick up his game as well. He got outcoached for the third week in a row. He got away with it vs New England but not the last two weeks.
The Packers are now 3-3. There are still 11 games left in the regular season, but they need to find some answers very quickly. They now hit the road for the next three games, starting next week at Washington to take on the Commanders. The way the Packers are playing right now, there is no sure thing. Also, the Commanders played on Thursday night, so they will have some extra time off.
It’s not fun going through these losing stretches. Something has to happen, a signing, a trade, a change in philosophy, because they aren’t going anywhere doing the same thing they are doing right now. We’ll see how they do in the Beltway next Sunday afternoon. Take care Packer fans!
