Aaron Rodgers still owns the Bears as Green Bay improves to 1-1
The Packers continued their dominance of the Bears as they won 27-10 in their home opener, evening their record at 1-1 in this young season.
The Packers got the ball first and drove down the field before settling for a field goal. The Bears answered with a touchdown and a 7-3 lead. The Packers were better on their second drive as Aaron Jones scored a touchdown for a 10-7 lead for Green Bay. They were also better on defense on the Bears’ second drive of the game as they prevented them from getting a first down. The Packers would go on to score 2 more touchdowns before the half, both on TD passes by Aaron Rodgers, the first to Jones and the second to Allen Lazard. Both teams traded field goals in the second half, giving the Packers the victory and yet another victory over their rivals from Chicago.
Thoughts about this win:
The Packers got their running game going this week as they rushed for over 200 yards. Leading the way was Aaron Jones, who had 15 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown.
They also had more success throwing the ball this week. The return of Allen Lazard sure helped. Sammy Watkins led the way with 3 receptions for 93 yards.
The sequence of the game was when the Bears were down 24-10 in the fourth quarter but threatening to score and trim the lead to a 1-score game. The referees initially ruled that Justin Fields reached the pylon and scored, but his knee was clearly down and it was overturned on replay. On the very next play, Fields took the snap from the shotgun and ran for the endzone, but he was denied, or was he? Replays were close, but there was ultimately no clear evidence to overturn the call.
The Packers did a good job getting the ball out of their own endzone. Rodgers fired a deep ball to Sammy Watkins who hauled it in for a huge 55-yard gain. They ended up with a field goal and a 3-score lead, and all Justin Fields could do for the Bears was scramble around and throw an interception to Jaire Alexander.
The offense played a lot better this week. They were efficient, especially the running game. The defense had their moments, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. They gave up too many long runs, but they did make it rough on Fields throughout the night.
It all adds up to another win vs their bitter rivals. The Packers now lead the all-time series 104-95-6. For the 15th year in a row, the Packers have won at least 1 game in this series every year and 29 out of the last 31 years. They have won 7 in a row and 12 of their last 13 in this series as well.
Next up for the Packers is a trip to Tampa to face the Buccaneers. The Packers will have their hands full next Sunday trying to stop Tom Brady and trying to move the ball against their defense. For now, let’s enjoy this win. Have a great week Packer fans!
