Packers look to shine before a national audience as they host the Bear
.
The Packers and Bears renew their rivalry when they get together at Lambeau Field on Sunday night in the Packers’ home opener.
The Packers are 0-1 after their 23-7 loss in Minnesota. The Bears are 1-0 after winning 19-10 vs the 49ers in a rain-soaked Soldier Field.
Justin Fields had a field day in the second half vs the 49ers, throwing a pair of touchdowns and sliding down the wet turf in celebration. They have a capable running back in David Montgomery and a deep threat at receiver in Darnell Mooney. Former Packer Equanimeous St. Brown makes his return to Green Bay. He had only 1 reception last Sunday but it went for a touchdown. Fields is elusive but he takes a lot of sacks. He is also prone to turnovers, and the Packers need some takeaways, something they were unable to get last Sunday at Minnesota.
Aaron Rodgers claims he doesn’t have to change a thing. His receivers need to grow up quickly. The good news is that Allen Lazard might be on track to play Sunday night. We will definitely be a welcome addition if he does. The younger receivers will be fine the more familiar they get with Rodgers and the offense. They need the running game to take off. Someone needs to get open and make a play. It’s up to the coaching staff to put them in a position to do so.
After trying and failing with Matt Nagy, the Bears went with a defensive-minded coach, as they brought in Matt Eberflus. I have seen some comparing him to Lovie Smith. It might be just a matter of time before he molds their young defense into one of the best in the league. It is also possible that he could be a total failure. Like Kevin O’Connell of the Vikings, he is 1-0 and has yet to lose as a head coach. Let’s change that on Sunday night. This game will be played on a much better field and in much better conditions than the rainy monsoon they had at Soldier Field last Sunday.
The Packers have enjoyed a lot of success vs the Bears the last 3 decades. Many of their wins vs the Bears have resulted in a playoff berth or a division title, and in one case, a trip to the Super Bowl. This level of domination won’t last forever. There might be some who see Green Bay as vulnerable right now. Let them think that. One thing that Rodgers has done a lot of his career is bounce back after a subpar performance the game before. The Packers are still heavy favorites in this game and I’m looking for them to keep their winning ways going vs the team from the Land of Lincoln.
Last Sunday’s loss to the Vikings was a frustrating one, but that is now in the past. Like my late father told me more than once, “There is no use crying over spilled milk.” All we can do is clean it up and come out with a much better performance the next time around. Besides, we’ll see the Vikings later in the season at our house. Let’s see how good they are then. For now, the focus is on the Bears and sending them away with a big L.
Home openers are always huge, especially when they take place on national television. There will be a whole day of anticipation as we await this matchup between two bitter rivals. Have fun wherever you are and make your voices heard. I believe they will bounce back and get a victory to even their record in this young season.
