Some thoughts about the preseason for the Pack
We are about a month away from the Packers’ first regular-season game, but first we have three preseason games to get through before then. I will give my take on it and what I expect and hope to see before their first game in September.
First of all, congrats to LeRoy Butler on his induction to the Hall of Fame. In my opinion, it should have happened long ago. He continues to be a major influence in the community, even after football.
The Packers hit the road to play the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night. I know we want to win every game, even in the preseason, and I know I’m not the only one who wants to see the Packers dominate from start to finish, especially after the awful way the Packers’ season ended in January. No matter what happens on Friday though, the Packers aren’t playing for any trophies. They just need to focus on the task at hand week after week.
Once again, we will see little to no Aaron Rodgers on the field this preseason. I understand it’s not going to make everyone happy, especially after how they played their first regular-season game last year vs the Saints down in Jacksonville. Either way, Jordan Love will start and hopefully we’ll see a significant improvement in his play from last year to this year. The receiving corps is a major question mark. Will someone emerge and become a pleasant surprise? I for sure would like to see it happen. Who will provide depth at running back and on the offensive line? The same goes for the defense, which might actually be the strongest part of the team, at least on paper.
The preseason obviously doesn’t tell the whole story, but I want to see something to reassure me that the special teams are vastly improved from last year. To say it was awful last season is a huge understatement. It was a major reason (but far from the only one) why the Packers were one and done in the playoffs in January.
It wasn’t even seven full months ago that the Packers ended their season with a thud, but it seems like a whole lot longer than that. I am ready for them to get back on the field and get their season started, which will be here soon but not soon enough in my opinion. Let’s have a productive and healthy preseason and get some positive momentum heading into the regular season.
