Packers were far from special as their season comes to an end
The Packers’ season came to a disappointing end as they fell to the San Francisco 49ers 13-10 on a game-winning field goal by Robbie Gould as time expired.
The Packers started out hot, moving the ball down the field and into the endzone for a 7-0 lead. That was all they could get in the first half though and the score remained 7-0. SF kicked a field goal to trim the lead to 7-3, but the Packers were able to move the ball but could only get a field goal out of it. A blocked punt by SF in the fourth quarter tied the game. After the Packers were unable to move the ball, the 49ers got it back and drove close enough down the field to kick the winning field goal.
Thoughts about this loss:
The momentum was stalled during the Packers’ second drive of the game. They were moving the ball effectively once again, but Marcedes Lewis fumbled the ball away to end what looked like another promising drive.
It looked like the Packers would get a score before halftime. Aaron Rodgers completed a 75-yard pass to Aaron Jones on third down. They were unable to get the ball into the endzone and Mason Crosby’s FG attempt was blocked as time expired in the first half.
The Packers were ahead 10-3 in the fourth quarter when SF went for it on fourth down. The Packers stuffed the run and all they had to do was move the ball and wind the clock down.
They couldn’t move the ball, and when Corey Bojorquez tried to get a punt off, it was blocked and the 49ers returned it for a touchdown and tied the game.
The Packers could not even get a first down on their next possession, and they punted the ball away, never to get their hands on it again the rest of the game.
I will be brutally honest. This game was a massive disappointment. Of course it’s disappointing whenever the Packers fall short of holding the trophy at the end of the season, but this one is extremely disappointing. The Packers didn’t even have to play a great game to win this one. They just had to be decent enough. Mistakes were made at the most inopportune time. This one will linger for quite a while.
Many of the Packers’ past playoff disappointments were blamed on the defense. In this game, horrible special teams and bad offense were much more to blame than the defense. A great regular season and home-field advantage all went down the drain in one game. I really feel bad for the Packer fans who attended the game. It’s really a gut punch to see a loss like that in person, especially in the cold and snowy weather.
Now that their season is over, there will be a lot of speculation and a lot of decisions that will need to be made. It’s almost a given that there will be a lot of players on the roster who will not be wearing a Packer uniform next season.
This is especially hard because these opportunities will not be around forever. We can only hope that they will be in a position to make another championship run next season. Maybe it will happen one of these years when we least expect it. Anyway, take care Packer fans! Win or lose, I am a fan until the end.
