Packers hold off Rams and improve to 9-3
The Packers jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but the Rams kept it close throughout the first half, going into halftime trailing 20-17. The Packers opened up the lead in the second half and led 36-17 before the Rams scored the final 11 points of the game, the last points coming on a field goal with 18 seconds left. The onside kick didn’t come close to working for the Rams and the Packers ran out the clock.
Thoughts about this win:
Aaron Rodgers didn’t let his broken toe keep him down. He continued to find ways to move the offense down the field.
The offensive line deserves a lot of credit. They held their own against one of the toughest defensive lines in all of football. Rodgers was only sacked once for zero yards.
The defense gave up two long pass plays, but they had their moments in this game. They forced a fumble of Matthew Stafford and also intercepted him for a touchdown. I wonder if Stafford had flashbacks of his Detroit days during this game at Lambeau Field.
Rasul Douglas returned that interception for a touchdown to give the Packers a 36-17 lead. He seems to have a knack for getting clutch interceptions for the Packers. He got that interception in the endzone that ended any comeback hopes for the Arizona Cardinals in that Thursday night game.
Randall Cobb had that muffed punt that resulted in a turnover, but the Rams were only able to get a field goal out of it. Cobb redeemed himself by catching a touchdown pass later in the quarter. He unfortunately left with a groin injury. Hopefully it’s not serious.
The Packers forced a fumble of their own on special teams. Rams’ return man J.J. Koski fumbled the ball away in the third quarter and Kris Barnes recovered. The Packers ended up getting a field goal on that takeaway.
It ended up as another frustrating loss for the Rams, their third in a row, and they were coming off their own bye week. Von Miller and Odell Beckham Jr. were added to the team during the last month or so and both of them made a play or two, but the team as a whole is struggling and in danger of losing ground in the playoff race.
There is still a lot to improve on, but the Packers won this game against the team they defeated in the playoffs last January. With all of the injuries the Packers had, they ended up as 1.5-point underdogs going into this game, a rare game where they are underdogs at home.
The bye week is coming at a time where they can rest some injuries and get ready for the stretch run. A week after their bye, they have a Sunday night home game with the Chicago Bears.
Things are looking well for the Packers right now. They got a nice win and now have a week off to prepare for the final five games of the regular season. Enjoy the bye week Packer fans! Their next game will be here before you know it.
