Packers hold off Washington to improve to 6-1
The Packers improved to 6-1 after winning 24-10 at home vs the Washington Football Team on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams scored touchdowns the first time they possessed the ball. It was tied 7-7 through much of the first half until the Packers scored a touchdown right before halftime. The Packers scored right after halftime on a takeaway. Both teams added a field goal each and the Packers came away with their sixth victory in a row.
Thoughts about this win:
The Packers did some good things offensively but Washington’s defensive line made things difficult for the Packers, sacking Aaron Rodgers 3 times and not giving up much in the running game. In fact, the Packers’ longest run of the game was by Rodgers and the second-longest was by Equanimeous St. Brown.
Both teams blocked a field goal in the first half. After the first two drives of the game, both teams moved the ball fairly well but had nothing to show for it until the Packers scored a touchdown with 15 seconds left before halftime.
Taylor Heinicke made some plays in this game, but he had a brain lapse in the third quarter. After the Packers took a 21-7 lead, Washington moved the ball down the field and Heinicke took the ball in himself for the touchdown, but it was called back because he slid down before the ball crossed the goal line. It was reversed and he was stuffed on fourth down. What could have been a tight game turned into some breathing room for the Packers.
Speaking of that play, it was the first time all season long an opponent got into the red zone and didn’t score a touchdown. The Packers would turn them away again 3 more times, stopping them twice and allowing only a field goal on that third time.
It was hardly a dominant win for the Packers. Washington led in total yards and time of possession. The Packers gave up a lot of plays on defense, but they managed to hold them to 10 total points. It wasn’t perfect but they did something right.
A.J. Dillon fumbled the ball twice and lost one of them. They are counting on him so he has to work on his ball security.
It was hardly a masterpiece but the Packers ended up with the win and that’s the important thing right now. They don’t have a lot of time to enjoy this win as they play at Arizona on Thursday night. Enjoy the win for now Packer fans! The next game will be here before we know it.
