It’s Throwback Sunday as the Packers host the Washington Football Team
The Packers return home after two road games and will face the Washington Football Team (WFT) at Noon (Central Time) on Sunday.
The Packers are 5-1 and are riding a 5-game winning streak after their 24-14 victory over the Bears at Soldier Field. The WFT is 2-4 after losing at home to the Kansas City Chiefs 31-13.
Taylor Heinicke starts at quarterback for Washington. He is probably good for a touchdown and an interception per game at least. They don’t boast a lot of household names on this offense. The Packers need to keep them in check. Make plays and get off the field. Turn it over to their offense and some takeaways would also be nice.
This is a game where Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Jones, and Davante Adams can really have a major impact. It is a huge opportunity for the other offensive players to shine. Washington is dead last in scoring defense. Let’s get the ball into the endzone and put some distance between them on the scoreboard early.
Special teams can never be overlooked. Mason Crosby made his lone FG attempt last Sunday after a rough game at Cincinnati. In a somewhat surprising move, the WFT released their kicker Dustin Hopkins and signed Chris Blewitt. What a name for a kicker! He kicked for Pitt in college but has never kicked in an NFL game. In an interesting note, Blewitt was one of the kickers the Bears brought in for a tryout after their infamous “Double Doink” playoff game.
The Packers will be wearing throwback uniforms for this game, uniforms from the 1950s. It was a rough decade as the Packers weren’t very good. Probably the best thing to happen to them in the decade was the hiring of Vince Lombardi in 1959. They also moved into New City Stadium (later renamed Lambeau Field) in 1957. The only winning season the Packers would have that decade was in 1959, Vince Lombardi’s first season as head coach, finishing 7-5.
This will be the first and probably only time that the Packers will face the Washington Football Team under their current name. These teams go way back into the early years of the NFL, but the Packers have kept their current name while Washington (and Boston before then) has made a few city and name changes in their history.
The WFT won their division and made the playoffs last season mostly on the strength of their defense. It’s not going very well for them so far this year and we want to keep it that way for at least one more game. After an emotional road win over the Bears and some tough games coming up on the schedule, the Packers need to be focused on this game and getting a win over the WFT.
Let’s take control of this game early and keep the pressure going. Whether you are at the game or not, let’s get loud and make our voices heard. It’s their first home game in the early Sunday time slot. Let’s get another win and celebrate the rest of the day.
