Rodgers and Adams both reached milestones in win over Eagles
The Packers won 30-16 over the Philadelphia Eagles. Aaron Rodgers got his 400th touchdown pass and Davante Adams reached 1,000 receiving yards for the season.
The Eagles were effective moving the ball on their first two drives but came up with only 3 points. The Packers were stopped on their first drive but scored touchdowns on their next two possessions to take a 14-3 lead into the locker room. The Packers scored twice in the second half to take a 23-3 lead but the Eagles would not go away. They pulled to within 23-16 before Aaron Jones took off for a 77-yard run to give the Packers a cushion. Darnell Savage intercepted Jalen Hurts to seal the victory.
Thoughts about the game and there are many:
The Eagles had their formula going early. They had a 15-play drive on their opening possession but came up with a field goal. After a stop, they took over at their own 49-yard line and looked like they had something going, but two sacks killed that drive.
The Packers made a gutsy call to go for the touchdown on fourth down in the second quarter. Not too long ago, teams would typically kick the field goal or call a running play on fourth down. At worst, they expect the Eagles to take over at the 1-yard line. At best, it’s a touchdown and the latter won out in this case. Davante Adams caught the touchdown, the 7th straight game he caught a touchdown pass.
Speaking of touchdowns, Robert Tonyan got one before the first half ended, his 8th of the season. Touchdown Tonyan is what I’ve been calling him lately.
In the third quarter, Rodgers hit Adams for another touchdown, Rodgers’ 400th career touchdown pass. Adams gave Rodgers the ball to keep as Rodgers doesn’t have the footballs from his other century milestone touchdown passes. Adams would later get enough receiving yards to hit 1,000 for the season. It was a great game by both players.
Carson Wentz was pulled for Jalen Hurts in the second half. Hurts didn’t have exceptional numbers, but he did get loose on some running plays and he converted on a deep pass on fourth down for a touchdown.
The Packers’ special teams were far from special in this game once again. Mason Crosby missed another extra point and they allowed Jalen Reagor to return a punt for 73 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. They missed the extra point but they cut the deficit to 23-16. All of a sudden, the Packers needed to make plays on offense in order to secure the win.
The Packers got the ball back and went nowhere. The Eagles with Jalen Hurts had a chance to tie the game, but the Packers’ defense held. The Packers got the ball back with a chance to keep the ball away from Philly, and Aaron Jones had even better plans. His 77-yard touchdown run was a thing of beauty. He made some great cuts and broke some tackles on his way to the endzone. After seeing opposing runners do the same thing to the Packers this season, it was nice to do that to the opposition for a change.
The Eagles got the ball back and Darnell Savage made a nice play for an interception. Jamaal Williams and Robert Tonyan made plays on offense to seal the victory.
The milestones just keep coming for Aaron Rodgers. He now has 400 touchdown passes vs only 88 interceptions in his career. Every other quarterback who reached 400 touchdown passes had well over 100 interceptions when they reached that milestone. Rodgers is a special player and we are fortunate to have him after Brett Favre thrilled us for many years.
Overall, it was a great win. It wasn’t a perfect game, but they are playing some nice football right now. They just need to keep improving, but they are more than capable of making a deep playoff run and being there at the end.
An update on the playoff picture: The Packers moved into the #2 spot in the NFC after their win and the Giants upsetting the Seahawks 17-12 at Seattle. Right now, the Packers would host the Vikings in the first round. Some of you out there might be nervous on the possibility of facing Dalvin Cook and the Vikings again but Minnesota hasn’t been great lately even though they won their last few games. They still have to face the Saints and Buccaneers. There is a chance they may not make the playoffs.
The Packers are now 9-3 and clinched another winning season. That’s not their ultimate goal of course but it’s a nice stat regardless. Next up for them is a trip to the Motor City to play the Detroit Lions next Sunday afternoon. Let’s keep the wins coming. Have a great week Packer fans!
