The path to the 1-seed in the NFC is finally clear for Green Bay
On Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals, led by former Packer backup QB Brett Hundley, went into hostile territory at CenturyLink in a potential division-clinching game for the Seattle Seahawks and beat them by a score of 27-13. Now, what does this mean for Green Bay? Well, a lot actually. With Arizona’s win, Green Bay, who’s currently the 2-seed in the NFC, will need to win out (@ Minnesota Monday night, @ Detroit next Sunday), and have the Seahawks beat the 49ers next Sunday night. Green Bay would then become the #1 seed in the NFC playoffs.
This is a huge opportunity for the Packers, as getting home field throughout the playoffs — especially in a conference littered with talent like the NFC, is absolutely crucial. Nobody wants to come to Green Bay for ONE playoff game in January — let alone having to come for two. All they need to do besides root for Seattle in week 17, is to take care of their own business. This upcoming game has a lot riding on it, and a win would be a huge momentum boost for them. Green Bay is 0-3 all-time at US Bank Stadium while Viking QB Kirk Cousins is 0-8 all-time on Monday Night Football. Something has to give.
Getting the #1 seed seemed all but impossible for Green Bay having to not only win out, but get some help along the way. Well, so far at least, Green Bay has gotten some help from the Arizona Cardinals. Now, it’s up to them to win their final two games and hope Seattle beats San Francisco in week 17 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle next Sunday. If those scenarios play out, Green Bay would not only become the NFC North division champion for the sixth time in the last nine seasons, earning the #1 overall seed in the playoffs, and, along with that, would get to host both the Divisional round and a possible NFC Championship game at Lambeau Field. Rodgers said it best last week after winning against the Bears: “I don’t think many teams want to come here and play us in this weather, [with] this field [and] this crowd. I feel good about our chances.” It’s time to go prove that, starting on Monday night in Minnesota.
