Packers look to send the Bears off to hibernation
The Green Bay Packers play their final home game of the regular season on Sunday when they host the Chicago Bears.
Both teams are coming off home victories. The Packers held off the Washington Redskins 20-15 while the Bears defeated the Dallas Cowboys 31-24 during their Thursday night game. The Packers defeated the Bears 10-3 in the season opener.
It was not too long ago that Bear fans were ready to run Mitchell Trubisky out of town, but he had some solid performances these last few games as the Bears won 3 straight and 4 of their last 5 to improve to 7-6. The Packers need to keep an eye on Trubisky running the ball because he was effective doing just that in their victory over the Cowboys. They need to keep Allen Robinson II in check because the Bears like to call his number a lot. They also cannot allow David Montgomery to have a huge rushing performance. I still don’t think their offense is anything to write home about but they have improved somewhat since the Packers played them in Week 1.
Aaron Rodgers didn’t have a great game passing the ball against the Redskins, but he didn’t need one as Aaron Jones accounted for more than half of the Packers’ total yards on offense. It will be important to get their running game going on Sunday once again. They need to move the ball around and keep the chains moving on offense, and most importantly, end those drives with the ball in the endzone.
I think field position will be very important in this game. Punter JK Scott needs to be on his game whenever he is out there. We all know about the Bears and their kicking woes these last two seasons. Perhaps it will end up being another close game.
The Bears still have a very good defense. One difference from last year and this year is they haven’t been getting as many takeaways this season. They had a ridiculous amount last season so it is probably expected that there would be some kind of drop-off.
I also mentioned that the Bears won 3 straight and 4 of 5. They defeated the Lions twice, the Giants, and then the Cowboys so it wasn’t against the best competition. Still, they won those games and the Packers haven’t exactly looked dominant themselves against weak competition lately. The Packers need to play a lot better than they did against the Redskins if they are going to win this game.
This will not be an easy one for the Packers. The Bears are fighting for their playoff lives right now. Don’t forget that they won 12 games last year and were a double-doink away from advancing in the playoffs. This is not a team that is going to quit. The Packers need to bring their A-game on Sunday.
We are hearing all of this talk about playoff scenarios and all that, but the fans can do that. The team needs to focus on one thing and that’s getting a win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Despite some bad losses, the Packers did a lot of good things so far this year. A loss on Sunday would be a step back plus it would ruin a lot of Christmas parties for Packer fans.
There is a chance that the Packers could clinch a playoff berth on Sunday. They would need a win plus a Rams’ loss or tie to get it. Since the Rams are playing the dysfunctional Cowboys, I wouldn’t count on both scenarios happening. The Packers just need to win their games. They will clinch a berth in the playoffs eventually if they take care of business.
This is the final regular-season game at Lambeau Field. Whether or not they have any home playoff games depends on what the Packers do these final three weeks. It will be a battle on Sunday but I think the Packers are the better team. They need to go out there and show it on the field however. I think they will do just that. Whether you are at the game or not, let’s get ready to cheer the team on to victory!
