Packers stumble home after loss to 49ers
The State of California was once again a nightmare for the Packers as they fell 37-8 to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.
It was a disaster from the start as Aaron Rodgers got sacked on third down on their opening drive and fumbled, which the 49ers recovered near the goal line. Tevin Coleman ran it in and the Packers were playing from behind the rest of the night. They gave up 10 points in the final minute of the first half and trailed 23-0, once again failing to score a point in the first half in the Golden State. They finally got on the board in the third quarter but they were unable to stop the 49ers on offense. Backup Tim Boyle got some playing time late in the game after the outcome had long been decided.
On the 3rd of November, the Packers were a hot team heading into Los Angeles to play the Chargers. They fell behind 19-0 before scoring a field goal in the third quarter and ultimately lost 26-11. They rebounded to beat the Carolina Panthers 26-14 heading into their bye week. They looked nothing like a playoff team on Sunday night. The speed of the 49er defense overwhelmed the Packers and an opposing tight end once again had a huge game against the Packer defense. This time it was George Kittle.
It definitely wasn’t the Packers’ night. The good thing is that they have a favorable schedule the rest of the way with only one team with a winning record left on their schedule. That team is the Minnesota Vikings, who now have the same record as the Packers. Green Bay still has the division lead at the moment due to their win over the Vikings in September.
The loss was a major disappointment and a huge opportunity lost as the Packers would have put themselves in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the NFC. All is not lost though, especially due to their schedule. In fact, the 49ers have some tough games ahead of them and Seattle is only a game behind them and handed the 49ers their only loss so far this season. As crazy as it sounds, it’s quite possible that the Packers could win their division and the 49ers end up as a wild-card team. In that scenario, any playoff meeting would take place at Lambeau Field, but if the Packers don’t make some huge adjustments, it won’t matter where they play.
Favorable schedule or not, the Packers have a lot of work to do. Nothing is guaranteed in this league. They travel to the East Coast for their next game, a meeting with the New York Giants. Let’s get a win next week and move on from there.
