Packers look to stay unbeaten on the road as they travel to Kansas City
The 6-1 Green Bay Packers travel to Kansas City to take on the 5-2 Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.
The Packers are coming off a 42-24 home victory over the Oakland Raiders while the Chiefs defeated the Denver Broncos on the road 30-6 but lost their starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the process.
Mahomes practiced on Wednesday but he will not start on Sunday. It will be the veteran Matt Moore who will get the start. Moore has had experience playing with the Carolina Panthers and the Miami Dolphins and he has some nice offensive weapons surrounding him on this team. They have LeSean McCoy who is still capable of having a big game. Tyreek Hill is always capable of having a monster game when he is on the field and Travis Kelce is one of the best tight ends in the NFL. Mahomes or not, the Packers cannot afford to fall asleep on defense. They have given up a lot of yards in some games this season but have been able to win with sacks and/or turnovers. If they get plenty of both on Sunday, they have a great chance of winning.
Aaron Rodgers had a career game vs Oakland. He is very capable of having another huge performance on Sunday night. Kansas City is vulnerable to the run so Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams might get a lot of carries. It is doubtful that Davante Adams will play but they have been winning in his absence so far. When Mahomes got injured on a quarterback sneak at Denver, their defense came up huge and stopped Denver the rest of the way. The Chiefs give up a lot of yards but they get sacks and turnovers. Does that sound familiar? The Packers need to execute and finish drives with touchdowns instead of field goals.
As we all know, the Packers defeated the Chiefs 35-10 in the first Super Bowl ever played, but the Packers have only defeated the Chiefs three times in the regular season. Arrowhead Stadium will be noisy as usual. The Chiefs also have the luxury of rest, last playing on a Thursday night, so they will be coming off a “mini-bye.”
With Mahomes out, the Packers are favored in this game. They cannot afford to underestimate this team, especially since other teams have been thriving with backup quarterbacks. The Saints have not lost since Teddy Bridgewater entered the starting lineup in place of Drew Brees. The Carolina Panthers have also won every game with Kyle Allen as the starting quarterback while Cam Newton is injured, and there is talk that Carolina should consider trading Cam before the deadline. The point is that the Packers cannot afford to take their foot off the gas pedal because Matt Moore is definitely capable of leading the Chiefs to victory.
Nobody tailgates like Green Bay but Kansas City is no pushover. It is almost like a college atmosphere on game days. Despite the huge fan support, the Chiefs are only 1-2 at home this season and that is with Mahomes in the lineup. The Colts and Texans found a formula that worked in their favor. It’s now up to the Packers to find their own.
The Packers will be playing in a hostile environment so they need to be alert on offense and avoid false starts and forced timeouts. The spotlight will be on Green Bay and Kansas City this Sunday night. It’s time for the Packers to shine once again in prime time. Let’s get it done on Sunday night!
