Packers and Lions battle it out in Green Bay on Monday Night Football
The Green Bay Packers are 4-1 and will play host to the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football.
The Packers are coming off their impressive win over the Dallas Cowboys on the road while the Detroit Lions are 2-1-1 and are coming off a bye week. Their last game was a 34-30 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Matthew Stafford is putting together a decent year with 9 touchdown passes, 2 interceptions, and a 62.4 completion percentage. Kerryon Johnson is their feature running back and Marvin Jones Jr. and Kenny Golladay all are contributing, even though they aren’t putting up dominant numbers. This offense is capable of putting a lot of points on the board, so the Packers need to keep getting sacks and turnovers, which they have done in their four wins.
Aaron Rodgers doesn’t have to do it all by himself as the Packers have a running back in Aaron Jones who is capable of making big runs and is a receiving threat out of the backfield. It is possible that Jamaal Williams will be back after suffering a concussion during that Thursday night game vs the Eagles. It is unclear whether Davante Adams will be back on the field on Monday night, but if he can’t go, the rest of the receiving corps will need to get open and make plays. The Lions give up yards on defense but they have recovered six opponents’ fumbles, tied for the most in the league.
The Lions have a kickoff return touchdown this year. Jamal Agnew ran one back at Philadelphia. Green Bay Punter JK Scott continues to get some great distance on his punts. Special teams might come into play in a big way on Monday night.
In Matthew Stafford’s early years, playing Green Bay was a nightmare for him, but he has played a lot better vs the Packers in recent years. In fact, the Packers have lost four straight and five of their last eight games vs the Lions. That is quite a contrast to how dominant Green Bay has been over Detroit from 1992-2014. In the final game of last season, Aaron Rodgers was knocked out of the game early with a concussion and the Packers would get shut out at home by the Lions, putting a bitter taste to an already disappointing season. It’s time to change that, especially at home.
The Lions have shown that they are a team to be taken seriously this season, even if it is early. Matt Patricia was thought to be on the hot seat entering this season, but he has the team playing well. They were very close to upsetting the Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers need to be ready for this team.
The Packers have started out well on offense but have only nine total points and no touchdowns in the fourth quarter this season. The defense has made key plays in four of the five games, but they need to start producing on offense in the fourth quarter, and that means touchdowns. The offense needs to put teams away.
The Packers have a great chance to come out and have a much better performance in primetime than they did the last time they played under the lights. I expect to see a hard-fought game but with the Packers making enough plays on both offense and defense to come away with the victory. Let’s get behind this team and cheer them to victory wherever you may be.
