Why Green Bay should be considered a top-three team in the NFC and NFL
Yes, we’re only a quarter of the way through the season, but Green Bay is getting better every week. It’s shown in the games they’ve played. Jumping right out of the gates with two straight division wins (Chicago and Minnesota) in back-to-back weeks, then beating a very game Denver Broncos team at Lambeau (their record definitely wasn’t indicative of their performance), stumbling a bit to Philadelphia during the second half in week 4 at Lambeau (quite honestly, the defense’s only bad second half of the year so far), then closing it out with a huge win in Dallas against the Cowboys. This season couldn’t have gone better for first-year head coach Matt LaFleur and company.
I definitely think he is the right HC for Rodgers and this team as a whole. I know it’s only a quarter of the way through, but this team has a much different vibe than in previous years. They just seem way more connected both on the field and in the locker room. I love it so far. Who knows how far it takes them; but for now, it’s definitely a refreshing thing. It’s also refreshing to know that Green Bay doesn’t need to rely solely on Rodgers to win games now. GM Brian Gutekunst did a masterful job in free agency in my opinion.
It’s paid huge dividends for Green Bay’s overall team culture too. The swagger that the new FA acquisitions bring (more specifically the Smith brothers Za’Darius and Preston), makes this team perform so much better as a unit. That’s one of the many reasons this team deserves all the praise and deserves to be mentioned among the elites in the NFC thus far. The stats and overall on-field performance says all you need to know about where this team is and also where it wants to be in the end.
Green Bay has a very big divisional tilt against the Detroit Lions coming up Monday night at Lambeau Field. If they can come out of that game with a win, that will be three division wins in the first six games of the season for Green Bay. One player that I hope continues his great play overall is RB Aaron Jones. He currently leads the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 8; which is more total TDs than the Jets and Dolphins have as a team combined (7). Another part of the team I hope continues to perform well is the defense. They lead the league in turnover differential (+7), are T-9th in sacks (15), are 2nd in interceptions (7), and are 4th in opposing QB passer rating (75.9). They’ll be looking to capitalize on Detroit’s mistakes on Monday night. If they do, I believe they’ll win.
Even before that game kicks off though, the Packers definitely need to be considered a top-three team in the conference as well as the NFL right now. They’re playing very well already without even clicking on all cylinders yet; that’s a very scary thought. Rodgers has been playing average thus far (for his standards), and yet, Green Bay still sits atop the NFC North at 4-1 — that’s a testament to the cohesiveness and unity of the team as a whole. No longer are they solely relying on Rodgers to win games; it’s actually a very refreshing thing to see. I’m excited to see what happens once they start clicking on offense as well as a defense; once that happens — lookout.
