Packers’ 2nd tier WRs look to step up in Adams’ absence
Davante Adams is a no-go for Sunday’s contest against the Cowboys which fortunately for him, will most likely be the only game he misses due to the non-severity of the injury he sustained in last weekend’s game against Philadelphia (strained ligament), per NFL Insider Ian Rapoport. That more than likely means that Green Bay’s second-tier WR group will need to elevate their level of play in lieu of Adams’ absence.
Second-year Packers’ WR Jake Kumerow spoke about this among other topics during the team’s media availability session on Wednesday: “We’re just looking to do the same thing we’ve been doing the last couple weeks. Really nail the game plan down and get on the same page with Aaron. That’s always been one of the things I’ve been trying to do since I got here is [to] get on the same page with him and to do that, you have to pay attention to detail and get it right in practice [in order] for you to get the opportunity in the game.”
On Adams being a detail-oriented guy: “Davante’s a really detailed guy; he’s definitely into his notes and him and Aaron; they make a lot of plays together so, they got a good trust. Aaron trusts where Davante’s gonna be and sometimes he just lets it fly and Davante will be there.”
On the collective attitude of the 2nd tier WR group as a whole: “We’re all hungry you know? We’re all looking to make plays. We all feed off of each other’s energy too. I think that’s a big thing is if one guy makes a play; the other guys get excited for him. You hope for their opportunity, you see someone having fun out there and you’re like: “Man, I want to get my chance to have fun and make a play.” We all just like to have fun and make plays; feed off of each other’s energy.”
On where he sees himself fitting in within the body of work for the group: “Just going through it a day at a time. Taking it a day at a time. Making sure I know my assignment, you gotta hear the call, you gotta know what you’re doing, and then you gotta do your job. That’s just kinda like the little steps we take [as a group] trying to get right.”
On his shoulder injury being completely healed: “Oh yeah, 100%.” Yep, that’s it, that’s his answer. Kumerow kept it both short and sweet. Whether or not that means we’ll see him get some snaps on offense remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure, whenever their numbers are called, I fully expect this group as a whole (Allison, Kumerow, MVS, Lazard, and Shepherd), to step up their play during Adams’ absence — however long that may be.
