Packers look to keep up their winning ways with the Broncos coming to Lambeau
The Green Bay Packers will be wearing throwback uniforms when they play the Denver Broncos at Noon Central Time at Lambeau Field.
The Packers are 2-0 with wins over the Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Vikings while the Broncos are 0-2 with losses to the Oakland Raiders and the Chicago Bears with the Bears winning on a 53-yard field goal on the final play of the game.
The Packers didn’t play against any quarterbacks with playoff success the first two games but Joe Flacco has a Super Bowl MVP and is still capable of picking a defense apart if given time to throw. Phillip Lindsay is a solid runner and Emmanuel Sanders still can make plays. This offense has been held in check for the most part and the Packers have been playing well on defense. Let’s keep it that way. Let’s get turnovers and pressure the quarterback all afternoon.
Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the offense showed glimpses of how great they can be in the first quarter against the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings made adjustments though and held the Packer offense in check, but the defense was able to make plays when it mattered the most. I am not worried about Aaron Jones or Davante Adams. I do think we need other players to make plays if the Packers are to win this game.
Special teams are always important and JK Scott has done his job and then some, pinning the opposing offense back and helping out the defense. You may have heard about the Packers picking up CB Tremon Smith who was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs. He has great speed and can also return punts and kicks. WR Trevor Davis has been traded to the Oakland Raiders. I am sad that he is gone but we have a capable guy in Smith who can also double as a backup DB.
The Packers and Broncos have not played a lot due to being in different conferences but they had some memorable matchups. I remember a game in 1993 where John Elway tried one of his comebacks but Reggie White would have none of it on that day, sacking Elway on third and fourth down on Denver’s final drive and preserving a 30-27 GB victory. The Packers would also defeat Denver 41-6 in 1996 when the Broncos were 12-1 and had already clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. That game showed the Packers that they were for real and they proved it, winning Super Bowl XXXI that season. It is hard to forget the overtime pass from Brett Favre to Greg Jennings on a Monday night in 2007 on the first play from scrimmage in the extra frame, giving the Packers a 19-13 win in Denver. Some games have gone Denver’s way but I won’t write about any of them.
The Packers are 2-0 and have won some tough games against divisional opponents, but I think that this is a classic trap game right here. Denver is 0-2 and has been on the other side of some tough games. They have not looked very good at times but they have a head coach in Vic Fangio who has had success on the defensive side of the ball and he also has had his share of success against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Green Bay cannot expect to come into this game thinking that Denver will just roll over and hand them the victory. The Packers need to come out and earn this win.
If the Packers want to be taken seriously, they have to win games like this one. I thought the crowd was excellent last Sunday vs Minnesota and gave the defense a boost when they needed it. We will need more of that on Sunday vs Denver. Wherever you are Packer fans, let’s make some noise and cheer the team to victory!
