Green Bay will need to fix offensive woes before facing Vikings
If the Packers want to come out of week 2 with a win against Minnesota, they’ll need to fix their offensive miscues. The Minnesota Vikings beat the Atlanta Falcons at home in week 1 fairly easily by a score of 28-12. The Vikings turned over Atlanta a total of 3 times in the game; RB Devonta Freeman fumbled once and QB Matt Ryan was intercepted twice. Viking QB Kirk Cousins was efficient enough in the win, going 8/10 for 98 yards and 1 touchdown along with a 140.8 passer rating. Newly healthy RB Dalvin Cook also had 121 yards on 21 carries, good for 5.3 YPC & 2 TDs. The Vikings defense is becoming a very formidable force; something Green Bay has to watch out for at Lambeau in week 2.
Green Bay also won in week 1, beating the division rival Chicago Bears in Chicago by a score of 10-3. It was a relatively mediocre night for both offenses. At one point, Green Bay had -12 total yards in the entire first quarter; their lowest amount since 1994. Rodgers was 2/5 for five yards in the first quarter. He ended up being effective enough though; going 18/30 for 203 yards and 1 touchdown, with a 91.4 passer rating. The second half is where he started coming into his own, going 5/10 for 71 yards. The defense held Chicago to 3 points and 254 total yards (208 passing, 46 rushing). Perhaps the best part of the victory was that former Chicago safety Adrian Amos intercepted Mitchell Trubisky in the end zone with 1:58 left in the 4th quarter, effectively ending the game. All in all, it was a great defensive performance.
Green Bay’s offense is what now needs to start clicking on all cylinders; especially if they expect to win against a balanced team like Minnesota. They most certainly won’t be able to win in week 2 by scoring 10 total points. Obviously, the offense is in the beginning stages with LaFleur now running the show as head coach. I expect it to gel more within the coming weeks and in turn, I expect to see more explosive plays in both the pass and run game. If Green Bay can come out on Sunday with a balanced attack on offense along with a tenacious effort on defense, I expect them to come out with a win. If not, they could be in for a long afternoon.
