Buffalo Rolls into Green Bay Looking to Score Another Huge Upset
The Green Bay Packers are back at home and will take on the Buffalo Bills at Noon Central Time on Sunday.
The Packers are 1-1-1 after they dropped one to the Washington Redskins on the road last Sunday. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills are 1-2, but that win was one of the most shocking upsets we have seen in a long time in the NFL, and maybe ever for some of us, as they won 27-6 in Minnesota.
The Vikings only rushed 6 times for 14 yards in that loss to the Bills. For the Packers to avoid a similar fate, they need to get their running game going. Aaron Rodgers is still toughing it out with his injury. The receivers need to catch the ball and make plays when their number is called.
Former Packer Micah Hyde was very upset when GB (or more accurately, Ted Thompson) did not offer him a contract and instead let him become a free agent. He is downplaying any animosity, but we all know that he really wants to win this game.
Bills’ rookie QB Josh Allen didn’t turn the ball over at Minnesota and was efficient with both his arm and his legs, running for two touchdowns and throwing for one. LeSean McCoy missed the Minnesota game, but he thinks he will be ready to go on Sunday.
This is not a great offense, but they just have to be efficient. The Bills’ defense forced 3 turnovers at Minnesota and did not turn the ball over at all on offense. The Packers have had problems getting turnovers. That needs to change and this game gives them a great opportunity to do so. It is still unknown whether Kevin King and Josh Jones will be available, but the secondary would get a huge boost if both are able to play.
Let’s try to make sense of the Bills’ huge upset win last Sunday. How does a team that is a 17-point underdog go into Minnesota, a Super Bowl contender (at least on paper), and win by 21 points? That is a bigger margin of victory than the point spread they were given before the game. That is a 38-point swing. I do not remember ever hearing about a game like that in my lifetime, and I am 41 years old. I thought for sure that they would be in the running for the top pick in next year’s draft, and perhaps they still will be, but this game was truly off the charts.
Was this game just a once in a generation type of fluke? Are the Vikings just pretenders after all? That couldn’t be, could it? Perhaps a turning point in Buffalo’s season was when Vontae Davis retired at halftime in the second game of the season vs the Los Angeles Chargers. Since he retired, the Bills have outscored the opposition 41-9 in 6 quarters of football. Perhaps there is something to it. There is no point in having players who don’t want to be there. Remove the dead weight from the team and the results may surprise you.
As of Wednesday night, the Packers are 9.5 favorites in this game, a bit more than half of the 17 points Minnesota was favored to win by last week. Although the Packers didn’t play well and lost last week, the Bills’ win at Minnesota was a sight for sore eyes. This is also a wake-up call for the Packers though. If they did it once, they can do it again. Any team that can go into Minnesota and do what the Bills were able to do has to have your attention.
If the Packers don’t play better than they did at Washington last week, they could be in big trouble in this game. In addition to this shocker, we also saw the Detroit Lions defeat the New England Patriots 26-10 on Sunday night. Any team is capable of beating any team anywhere. You have to be ready to play every single week or you might be embarrassed, sometimes in historical fashion.
I really hate to bring up these personal fouls for roughing the passer. I am sure that most of us think that the rule and the interpretation of it is pure garbage. There is a good chance that there will be more bogus calls on Sunday. No matter what stage of the game these take place, the players have to keep their composure and focus on winning the game. It’s terrible that I have to write about things like that but this is where we are in today’s NFL.
No matter who we are playing or what the circumstances are, the Packers need a win on Sunday to get this thing turned back in the right direction. They have a great chance to get that second win of the season. Let’s not see any hiccups on Sunday.
The Packers will be wearing throwback uniforms on Sunday. Let’s also see some winning football once again. If you are attending the game, be loud and full of energy and let’s cheer the team to victory and get back into the win column!
