The Green Bay Packers (1-0-1) will hit the road this week to take on the Washington Redskins (1-1-0) this Sunday at Fedex Field in Landover, Maryland. Kickoff is set for noon.
The Packers are coming off an exciting, heartbreaking tie (29-29) at Lambeau Field against the Minnesota Vikings. A match that could have been won by either team, however, the Vikings missed 3 field goal attempts. The Packers were held back by the referees as there were three arguable calls. Those calls probably cost the Packers the game. Most notably was a roughing the passer call on Clay Matthews. The replay showed his hit on Kirk Cousins was a textbook tackle but nevertheless, the Packers were penalized for 15 yards. That penalty also took away a potentially game winning interception. Cousins went on an impressive comeback in the 4th quarter forcing the game into overtime. Then in overtime, the Vikings missed what could have been the game winning field goal. That was later matched by Mason Crosby as the clock ran out resulting in a tie game.
The Vikings kicker was fired on Monday and was replaced by ex-Dallas Cowboy kicker Dan Bailey. Ironically the last time the Packers ended up with a tie score was against the Vikings on November 24th, 2013 at Lambeau Field. The final score was 26-26
The Redskins are coming off a loss to the Indianapolis Colts with a score of 21-9.
Quarterback Alex Smith threw for 292 yards but went 5/15 on 3rd downs and 0/2 in the red zone. Aaron Rodgers against the Vikings threw for 281 yards and was 30/42.
These two teams have met 36 times with the Packers leading 20-15-1. That also includes 3 postseason games. They also tied back on November 13, 1932. The last time these two met up they played on November 20, 2016 with the Packers losing 42-24. Interesting enough is that both Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers were drafted in the 2005 NFL Draft. Smith was the #1 pick while Rodgers was the 24th, both in the first round.
This may be a showboat of arm strength and accuracy of both quarterbacks but the Ultimate pick this week has the Packers coming out on top 30 -24.
